National WASP WWII Museum – Sweetwater TX

Honoring the Life and Legacy

The WWII WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) Museum in Sweetwater, Texas, stands as a cherished tribute to the brave and trailblazing women who played a pivotal role during World War II.

Housed within the historic Avenger Field, the museum preserves the remarkable legacy of the WASP program, where over 1,000 women aviators volunteered to fly military aircraft, ferry planes, and perform essential duties, freeing up male pilots for combat missions.

Captivating Exhibits, Artifacts and Personal Accounts

Through captivating exhibits, artifacts, and personal accounts, the museum offers visitors a glimpse into the determination, courage, and unwavering patriotism of these extraordinary women. It serves as a poignant reminder of the impact they had on the war effort and their enduring contribution to aviation and gender equality.

We found the personal accounts especially engaging and moving. These women were trailblazers for their time.

There’s plenty to keep the kids interested too! There are a number of hands-on experiences to be had. We especially enjoyed the Training Center and had an engaging and informative experience of what it was like to be recruited and what was expected of these women.

Another Harvest Host That's Great for Big Rigs

We were surprised that this museum wasn’t already a Harvest Host when we visited it. The museum is right off of Interstate 20 and has a side graveled lot with plenty of room for Big Rigs. If you come in from the east you can avoid the train bridge. If you come from the west,  take that bridge underpass slow, its a tight fit!

Mark, once again, talked to someone inside and got the wheels rolling…. and because of his effort, this museum, too, is now a Harvest Host. This also happened when we visited the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, FL. And, again, this is why we often will ask other places if they are Harvest Hosts. 😁
