"RV Newbies" and Our Extremely Long Learning Curve
Learning how to protect our expensive RV electronics and appliance systems onboard our motorhome has been an extremely long learning curve for Sue & I. The list of things that can go wrong if you plug into a damaged, worn out or mis-wired power pedestal is long. One should also remember that poorly maintained RV Park power can be downright dangerous.
As “RV Newbies”, we had to start the process by doing weeks of article research on the website irv2.com and watching countless hours of YouTube channels videos. Eventually, in June of 2017 we decided to start with the following equipment:
- Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X (EMS = Energy Management System)
- Hughes Autoformer RV220-50-SP
(We started our YouTube Channel in December of 2018.)
This system served us well until I decided to make a video about what equipment we use in March of 2021. By this time, a new more ADVANCED and BLUETOOTH enabled EMS had been developed by the Hughes Autoformer Company, and I decided to “update” to that device when I made this video. This new device was the Power Watchdog EMS model PWD50-EPO (Emergency Power OFF) device.

Cord Reel Assembly Can Be an Issue Too!
Two of our favorite YouTubers are Bob & Pearl at “Just Passing Thru” (Next Exit). They recently did a video on some issues they experienced with their cord reel assembly. Take a look at this to see the importance of taking care of this expensive device. Always adjust the cord reel “length” into position BEFORE you energize the cable. Leave it in that position you selected until it is UNENERGIZED AGAIN to avoid burning up the slip ring contact mechanism. https://youtu.be/ya4nDfAXRn4
